The Golden Age: From Harlem to Hollywood

CCP’s annual concert returns in early January! Our theme this year celebrates the Golden Era of American music that began in the nightclubs of 1920s Harlem and became cultural sensations in the 1930s with the advent of the Hollywood musical. This concert features solos, small groups, and full ensemble performances, showcasing the timeless work of composers like George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Cole Porter, and Fats Waller. Their music not only defined a generation—it laid the foundation for American popular culture that still resonates today.

Pig’s Eye Jass Band

The Pig’s Eye Jass Band plays traditional jazz from the 1890s–1930s. This music (also called New Orleans style), is America’s original art form and will get your feet moving! People of all ages enjoy listening and dancing to the driving beat and inspiring vocals and solos. The Jass has been going strong since 1961. Its name was inspired by Pig’s Eye Landing (the city of St. Paul’s initial name) plus “jass,” an archaic spelling. Early American popular music pieces celebrating King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, Jelly Roll Morton, Sidney Bechet, and great blues singers Bessie Smith and Alberta Hunter are performed.
